As you might know, I really love Levi. It is one of the most amazing destinations in the whole Finnish Lapland. We go here several times a year, both Winter and Summer. When Lapland The Magazine invited me to visit this beautiful once again, I knew that I had to answer the call!
There are many reasons to love Levi – beautiful alpine and cross-country skiing tracks, a myriad of winter adventures and safaris, as well as the the sheer beauty of the place.
It is also a great place to spot the Northern Lights, as it is situated towards the North of the region.
Our trip takes places in early February. The scenery is still very wintery, but there’s already lots of bright vernal sun. Our hotel of choice is Lapland Hotel Sirkatähti, as it is conveniently situated just a stone’s throw away from the main slope. The hotel’s rooms have been recently renovated.
Nevertheless, we do not stay to enjoy its coziness as we rush to the slopes to get the best light!
Levi offers ski slopes for every skill level, and there are ski lifts all around the mountain. The fastest and the most convenient one is the Gondola lift. The Southern slopes are dedicated for families with kids, but we prefer something more exciting
If you do not do alpine skiing, you can still use the Gondola lift to get to the top of the mountain.
As a matter of fact, I would really recommend it, as Levi summit offers some breathtaking views over the area.
Being in Levi, we certainly had to visit the so-called “Santa’s hut”. After appearing in a movie, it has spontaneously become one of Levi’s attractions.
Of course, there is a lot of natural beauty to lay your eyes upon and capture with your camera.
I rarely end up being on the other side of the viewfinder, but occasionally, it happens!
It’s time to take a little break. Our favourite place for lunch at the Levi fell is definitely the Horizont restaurant. It is overlooking the main slope and you can also get here by car.
The menu is not huge, but the food is delicious.
More than a ski resort: snowmobiling in Levi
In the afternoon, after the skiing, we decide to embark on a snowmobile adventure. There are several safari & tourist companies in Levi, but Lapland Safaris is the most known and the biggest one. We chose the afternoon departure to get the most out of the sunset and capture some photos.
We are picked up by our guides from the hotel and make a short walk to the company’s office. We are given the proper gear and join the other guests. These guys were really super, by the way!
Before we depart, we are given a lesson on safety instructions and driving the snowmobiles.
It takes a bit of time for everybody to settle on their snowmobiles and start rolling.
However, just 5 min from Levi centre, we start to encounter some good views.
We are not the only ones who chose to spend the afternoon around nature, as there are many cross-country skiers on the ice of the Immeljärvi lake. At this time of the year, it is covered by a thick layer of ice which makes it totally safe to drive on top of.
We get on some speed and leave the civilization behind. It’s only us and the wilderness now.
After a good bit of driving, we take a break and enjoy the colours of the sunset.
Our amazing guides treat us with some hot berry juice. Delish!
Soon, our red iron horses start taking us back to Levi centre. We spend the remainder of the evening relaxing in our hotel.
Driving the snowmobile in the snowy wilderness was a seriously awesome experience! Of course, there are many other fun activities in Levi, such as husky and reindeer safaris, ice fishing, snowshoeing etc. There are also many cozy restaurants in the resort’s centre, which will offer you some delicious local treats. However, I leave it up to you to discover them. Make sure to travel to Levi, at least once in a lifetime!
P.S. We did not see the Northern Lights that night because it was cloudy, but if you want to know what are the best places to spots to see Northern Lights in Levi, follow the link!
