Full name: Ulrika Stenberg
Working in Lapland Safaris since: December 2009
I really like driving the snowmobile and the feeling of freedom that it gives you. In a short time you can move over a big area and see different landscape and scenery.
Where are you from? In case you are not from Lapland, how did you end up in Lapland?
I’m from Sweden. In 2007 I worked in Portugal and one of my Finnish colleague told me about Saariselkä, in Finnish Laplanb, so 2 years later I thought that I should give it a try… At the time I didn’t even know where Saariselkä was located so it was a bit of a shock to move this far north.
How long have you been working for Lapland Safaris? How did you start?
I started to work in December 2009. From the beginning I was just supposed to work for about 2 months but since then I have kept coming back. It was my first experience working as a guide with winter activities and i really enjoy it.
Tell us something about your work…
Over the years I have been doing all kinds of guide work but also working in the office with planning and preparations. When I started I worked mainly with French groups, doing different activities like skiing, snowshoe walking, snowmobile safaris, visits to the reindeer farm and the interesting SIIDA museum in Inari. The last winters I have been doing quite many snowmobile safaris to the Arctic Sea.
From all the activities offered by Lapland Safaris, what is your favourite and why?
I really like driving the snowmobile and the feeling of freedom that it gives you. In a short time you can move over a big area and see different landscape and scenery. I also enjoy snowshoe walking because it’s quiet and you have time to see small details, like traces of animals or trees with interesting shapes and forms.
What is your favourite time to visit Lapland and why?
I only work in Lapland during the winter and it offers a unique experience with amazing scenery and activities. In the late summer / autumn the fell area has beautiful colours and it is the perfect time to go hiking.
What do you do in your free time?
Well… some days it’s just nice to lay on the sofa and then go for dinner at one of the restaurants in Saariselkä, but otherwise I like being outdoors. There are lots of good tracks for cross country skiing for example.
