Full name: Carlos Gómez Magana
Position: Digital Marketing Assistant / Safari guide
Working in Lapland Safaris since: 2015.
1. Where are you from? and in case you are not from Lapland, How did you end up in Lapland?
When I was 22-years-old it came the day to step up and look forward. I wanted to live an authentic and brand new experience away from everything I already knew, completely different from what I was living in Spain. And such experience I could not have it so close to my country where traditions and habits are quite similar. I wanted a radical change on my own.
So, when I had the choice to choose studying abroad I decided to come to Lapland. Why Finland? Why Lapland? Why Rovaniemi?
If I’m honest it was because one day about 10 years ago I was visiting Laapenranta, where my brother was an international exchange student and I fell in love with this country. At this time I promised to myself that one day I would be back.
Of course, the contrast of being Spanish trying to live in northern Finland is a bit difficult during your first days mainly because it’s a bit colder, so for those who would like to come in here and don’t know what to wear in Lapland, check this out !
2. How long have you been working for Lapland Safaris? Have you been already working in that position? How did you started?
Since July 1st 2015. I started as a Marketing Digital Assistant doing my internship for three months. Following this, I had the opportunity to also explore outdoors with the clients as a safari guide during the winter season.
My schedule is then basically as follows: half of the year I’m working inside the office with my colleagues taking care of the social media as part of the digital marketing strategy of the company. The other half of the time I go outdoors with international customers (Individual or Incentive groups) assisting and helping with any needs during snowmobiles safaris and all kind of guiding.
Who wouldn’t like this job and opportunities? 😛
3. From all the activities offered by Lapland Safaris, what is your favorite and why?
It depends what are you looking for. As you can feel I have been driving several times with snowmobiles and I already know most of the places around. Thus, as a favourites ones, I would say:
“2 days snowmobile safari in the capital of Lapland” (which is 28 hours)
“Wilderness safaris” (which is “only” two hours)
As a customer or as a first time experience I would take “Santa Claus Safari” because you will get the opportunity to drive the snowmobile, take a reindeer ride and participate in a typical Lappish ceremony in addition of visiting Santa Claus Village and see Santa face to face.
4. What is your favorite time to visit Lapland and why?
In my opinion, the best time to visit Lapland is in March. Because the Sun is showing up little by little so you get the chance to feel the contrast of snow and light and you will be able to see unforgettable landscapes and live once-in-a-lifetime experience.
5. What do you do in your free time?
During my free time I’m trying to do some sports like running, football or anything to keep moving.
During the summer season, let’s say we are lucky for having a beautiful “beach” where you can go swimming or you can also enjoy outdoor activities appreciating the 24 hours day light and take the entire D-vitamin for the rest of the year.
Hiking is one of my favourites hobbies during the summer time as you can say hello to our best friends (the reindeers) even in front of your house. Football is being part of my life as a Spaniard, so I’m always availabe to watch Rops (Rovaniemi football team).
During the winter time you have lots of indoor sport facilities where you can practise any sports you like and even, if you are strong enough, go swimming too (it’s quite an experience). In other words, if you dont do any kind of sport is mainly because you dont want to get frozen while going to these places 😛
I love winter time since it gives me the opportunity to do ice fishing and skiing with these incredible landscapes.
