Magical experiences in Lapland

About the autor of this post: My name is Madeleine, I am 22 years old and I am from the southern part of Germany. I came to Rovaniemi last September and totally enjoy living here and fell in love with Lapland: especially with the cold, the snow and the atmosphere! I love travelling through the world, making new experiences and discovering beautiful places and cities. Since I am here, I have been travelling to Norway, Sweden, Russia and to other parts of Finland. Besides travelling I love taking pictures and collecting memories and moments.

A love letter to the amazing and beautiful Finnish Lapland

I started my journey to this dreamy Winter Wonderland last September! I have to admit I was kind of skeptical because of the cold and the twilight. I had some fixed imaginations in my mind. Therefore packed with expectations and mixed emotions I was curious how life will be in this so different place! It did not disappoint me in any case!

Northern Lights – magical and unique moments

Lapland is a location full of magic and diversity of wonders! There is no other place where you can find so much peace and silence in the nature. Whether you are standing in a cold winter night outside and looking in the sky, seeing stars and watching northern lights or you are walking in the forest, hearing only the sounds of snowflakes touching the ground and nothing else. This silence is what makes Lapland to a special and unique place!

You cannot say that you have visited Lapland if you did not experience the magic atmosphere of northern lights projected in the air. It is an incredible feeling when the different colors – green, gold, red, blue or purple – are dancing all over the sky!  But be aware that you are wearing enough warm clothes because sometimes you have to wait long time till northern lights are appearing! And you do not want to get cold feet! Therefore a can of hot tea is always a good idea! You should exercise patience as it can take nearly forever to wait for northern light until you can see them! But then it is totally amazing and a breathtaking experience in your life you will never be able to forget!

What to do in Rovaniemi – the Capital of Lapland?

Now you know for sure: Lapland is awesome, but why travelling to Rovaniemi? There are plenty of reasons! First of all, Rovaniemi is the home of Santa Claus and therefore you should not miss the opportunity to visit him from face-to-face in the Santa Claus village near Rovaniemi. Santa Claus is always up for little talks and jokes! He even knows every language! Moreover, besides Santa Claus, there is the wildlife park Ranua, which is located approximately one hour by car into the south of Rovaniemi. There you should definitely benefit of the relaxing effects of spending a whole day walking around and watching the different animals. But not only in the wildlife park also in other locations there are many possibilities to see some of the typical Lappish animals.

When coming to Lapland, you should definitely visit a reindeer farm! It is the unique experience and nowhere else you can do this! Of course, you can see reindeers on the street while driving with the car, but nowhere else you can come so close to them! Furthermore, isn’t it a funny and unique souvenir for you or your children to pass a reindeer driving licence? You never know when you will get this awesome opportunity in life again! You should definitely go on a husky sledge ride or on a snowmobile tour and enjoy the beautiful and breathtaking surroundings when the nature is slowly converting into a winter wonderland.

Typical Finnish activities

Another must-do in Lapland is ice swimming! You should not miss this typical Finnish activity. Going in winter at -15 ° C in the water takes of course some effort and courage! But for all that you will be rewarded with regenerating and energetic effects on your body. I would really recommend you to alternate between one round in the cold water and one turn in the hot Finnish Sauna. The change between the warmth and the coldness will make you feel like a newborn healthy person!

If you are interested in sports and in typical Finnish activities then you should definitely try cross-country skiing! There are many official trails in Rovaniemi where you can enjoy the beautiful nature on skis! The Finns are totally crazy after this sport! Therefore you can be sure to meet a lot of them on the trails, especially on the weekend.

You do not like to exercise that much? You are more the calm and peaceful type? Then, ice fishing should be the perfect Finnish activity for you! Standing on the frozen river surrounded by peaceful scenery, drilling a hole into the ice and trying to catch some fishes can be a really relaxing activity. Of course, you should keep in mind to dress up warm enough for the long hours waiting in the cold.

Summer in Lapland

You are not a big fan of the cold, the snow and the winter in total? Don’t worry! You can come to Lapland in summer and experience the season of midnight sun when it never gets dark! Just imagine: doing a barbecue with your friends and enjoying a pleasant sunbath at midnight! How awesome this would be!

All this little things makes Lapland to the unique place and an experience I will never forget and would not want to miss!
